Babur Tongur is an award winning composer and conductor. He composed for solo instruments, chamber music, orchestra, and stage. His music was performed around Europe, Turkey, and Canada. He started professional musicianship education at the age of four playing piano and continued with the violin. He taught Dalcroze, Kodaly, Martenot and Orff methods in master programs at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He found Istanbul Theater Orchestra in 1979 and conducted it until 1990. During this time he pioneered many premiers in Turkey including the stagings of “Three Penny Opera,” and “West Side Story.” He conducted Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Orchestra from 2000 to 2006 where he conducted Mozart’s Magic Flute, Cosi fan Tutte, and Requiem, Beethoven Symphony No. 5 and No. 9 along with many other orchestral works. He retired from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory after thirty years of teaching composition, theory, counterpoint, basic skills, and orchestra. His students won prestigious performing competitions, and they currently hold positions in prominent orchestras in Europe, and the U. S. They also appear on the stages all over the world with solo performances.
Ilkim Tongur, Ph. D. is a composer and a choir conductor. She composed for solo instruments, chamber music, orchestra and electroacoustic medium. Her music has been performed in the United States, Canada, and Turkey. She is coming from an artistic family including composers, dancers, instrumentalists, and painters. She started her piano education at the age of six with her mother and continued her full-time professional musicianship education in State conservatory at the age of eleven. She holds a composition/conducting undergraduate and a master’s degrees from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. And a composition master’s degree from the University of Manitoba where she earned Orff certificate and got piano pedagogy with Edmund Dawe. She taught basic skills, theory and choir in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, as well as composition and piano in University of Manitoba Preparatory Studies. She also taught composition at the University of Calgary. She recently completed her Ph.D. in composition at the University of Calgary where she studied under Allan Bell. She had teaching experience over twenty years and worked with students between ages of 3 and 74. She composed three beginning books for piano and developed her own teaching system which allows students to learn faster without sacrificing fun and maintaining the crucial technical development at the same time.
Ferhat Tongur is a fast developing pianist. He started playing piano at the age of three with Ilkim Tongur. He took classes in University of Manitoba Preparatory Studies. He performed in Turkey and Canada. By the age of fifteen, he already played some Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn Sonatas, several works by J. S. Bach, more than half of Chopin etudes and works of Scriabin. He graduated from MRU Conservatory Senior Piano Class in 2016 May. He is a founder member of Flying Whales Trio. With Flying Whales Trio they got the second prize in Chamber Ensemble Competition in 2016. He is currently working on completing a new recital program and pursuing a political science degree at the University of Calgary.
